Frequently asked questions
Story-point estimation questions, answered.
Practical answers about running free online estimation sessions with your agile team.
Cost and access
Is Story Pointing Hub really free?
Yes. The application is completely free to use. There is no trial period, paid plan, subscription, or feature upgrade required.
Do I need to register or create an account?
No. Enter a display name to create or join a room. There are no account credentials, team workspaces, or email-verification steps.
Does everyone need to install something?
No. Story Pointing Hub runs in a web browser. Share the room link and teammates can join directly.
Rooms and invitations
How do I invite people to a room?
Select the room-code control to copy an invite link, then share it through your usual chat or meeting tool. Teammates can also join from the application home screen using the eight-character room code.
How long does a room last?
By default, a room expires after 24 hours without a state-changing action. A moderator can also end it manually. Rooms and their history are temporary and cannot be recovered after removal.
Why do I see “Room not found”?
The code may be incomplete, or the room may have expired, been ended, or been removed during a service restart. Confirm the complete code with the moderator. If the room no longer exists, create a new one.
Can I test a room as several different people?
Yes. Use separate browser profiles, different browser applications, or a regular window plus a private/incognito window. Normal tabs in one browser profile share local storage and are best treated as the same person. Private tabs in the same private session may share storage too.
Voting and estimates
What is collaborative story pointing?
Collaborative story pointing is an agile estimation method. Team members privately choose values for a user story or backlog item, reveal them together, and discuss differences before deciding what the work means for the team. Read the story-point estimation guide for a detailed walkthrough.
Can other people see my vote before reveal?
No. During voting, you can see your own selected value while others see only that your vote is ready. Submitted values become visible when the moderator reveals the round.
What do the default values mean?
The default scale—1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, and ?—supports relative sizing. Larger numbers imply a larger combination of effort, complexity, uncertainty, and risk. “?” means you need more information before estimating.
Can we use a different pointing scale?
Yes. The moderator can configure 2–20 unique point values. Changing the values during an active item clears existing votes and reopens voting.
Does the application choose the final estimate?
No. It shows individual values, distribution, and the average of numeric votes. The team decides what the result means after discussing differences. The average is a summary, not an automatic recommendation.
Can the team vote again on the same item?
Yes. The moderator can clear votes after discussion, which keeps the active item and reopens voting for everyone.
Moderation and presence
Can someone else become the moderator?
Yes. The moderator can select “Promote to Moderator” for any connected participant. The option is not shown for disconnected people.
What if the moderator loses their connection?
They have 30 seconds to reconnect. After that, a connected participant who is not marked away can take the moderator role and keep the session moving.
What do the colored presence indicators mean?
Bright green means connected, grey means disconnected, and red means the participant has marked themselves away. A moderator who is disconnected displays both the moderator role and disconnected status.
Privacy and data
What information is saved?
There are no user accounts or durable room records. Active room state exists temporarily in server memory, and a room-specific credential is stored in your browser to support reconnection. Once the room is removed, its server-side state is gone.
Can I recover a room after it expires?
No. Expired, ended, or otherwise removed rooms and their histories cannot be restored. Generate or copy the session report before ending a room if you need to retain the results.
